Kitakyushu, June 3, 2025 — The Department of Geography, Faculty of Social Sciences, Universitas Negeri Malang (FIS UM), officially established an academic collaboration with Kodama Laboratory, Kitakyushu University, Japan. The signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) took place on June 3, 2025, at the Dean’s Room, Faculty of Humanities, Kitakyushu University.
The FIS UM delegation was represented by Alfi Sahrina, M.Pd, and Dr. Heni Masruroh, while Kodama Laboratory was represented by Prof. Yayoi Kodama and Dr. Indriyani Rachman. This partnership marks the beginning of a cross-national collaboration aimed at strengthening the development of geography science and higher education through a multidisciplinary approach and the integration of the latest technologies in geographic research.
This collaboration encompasses several strategic areas, including joint research focused on pressing global issues in geography, such as climate change, disaster mitigation, and the application of innovative concepts in spatial analysis. Additionally, this partnership aims to produce joint publications in prominent international journals, enhancing the academic exposure of both institutions in global scholarly forums.
Furthermore, the partnership will facilitate guest lectures and participation in the 5th International Conference on Geography and Education (ICGE), where members from both institutions will have the opportunity to exchange ideas, share cutting-edge research findings, and contribute as keynote speakers.
Beyond the research collaboration, the core focus of this MoU is academic capacity building and human resource development. These activities are expected to inspire and enhance the capabilities of faculty members, researchers, and students at both institutions to utilize advanced technology-driven approaches for spatial analysis, disaster mitigation, and sustainable natural resource management.
This partnership is expected to make a significant contribution to the development of research and education in the field of geography, while strengthening international networks among higher education institutions focused on advancing geospatial knowledge, environmental policy, and science-based education. This initiative is aligned with Universitas Negeri Malang’s ongoing efforts to internationalize its academic programs and enhance its global academic standing through strategic and sustainable research collaboration.
