Malang, 23 July 2025 — In a strategic initiative to bolster its standing as a globally recognized institution, the Department of Geography at Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) successfully convened an International Guest Lecture titled, “Apply Systematic Literature Review (SLR) in Environmental Research.” This event underscores the university’s commitment to achieving its World-Class University (WCU) vision and contributing directly to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of quality education and environmental stewardship.

The event, held at the Ki Hajar Dewantara Hall, brought together students and faculty from the Geography Education and Physical Geography programs. It was formally opened by Syamsul Bachry, Ph.D., Vice Dean III Faculty of Social Sciences, who emphasized the critical role of robust international partnerships in elevating academic excellence and research impact, aligning with SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Fathin Ayuni Azizan, a distinguished senior lecturer from the Department of Agrotechnology, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). Dr. Fathin, leveraging her extensive interdisciplinary expertise in agricultural remote sensing, precision agriculture, and soil & water engineering, provided a masterclass on the application of SLR. She demonstrated how SLR serves as a cornerstone methodology for evidence-based research, essential for addressing complex global challenges such as climate change and food security, which are central to SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land). Dr. Fathin articulated that a mastery of SLR, particularly following the internationally acclaimed PRISMA guidelines, is what distinguishes high-impact research suitable for top-tier scientific journals. Citing her own publications, she guided participants through the entire rigorous process, from formulating precise research questions and developing robust review protocols, to executing strategic searches across leading international databases like Scopus and Web of Science, implementing meticulous literature screening, and ultimately, synthesizing data through advanced analysis and structuring the article for impactful publication.

Moderated by Mr. Rivandi Pranandita Putra, S.P., M.Sc., the session fostered a dynamic and interactive learning environment. Students and lecturers engaged in insightful discussions, focusing on the practical application of SLR for final theses, dissertations, and navigating the competitive landscape of international academic publishing.
The strategic objectives of this guest lecture were multifaceted. It aimed to elevate the research competencies of students and faculty to meet international standards, a key WCU benchmark, while simultaneously equipping participants with the skills for systematic, evidence-based scientific writing to enhance research quality. Furthermore, the initiative sought to cultivate a new generation of geographers prepared to contribute meaningfully to global scientific discourse and to strengthen international academic networks, in direct support of SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
This initiative is a clear reflection of the Department of Geography’s proactive commitment to internationalizing its curriculum and fostering a world-class research culture. By equipping its academic community with globally relevant methodologies, Universitas Negeri Malang not only accelerates its journey toward becoming a leading research university but also reinforces its role as a key contributor to solving the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges through scholarly excellence and international collaboration. All participants were awarded an electronic certificate, and the Department extends its profound gratitude to Dr. Fathin Ayuni Azizan and UniMAP, affirming that such high-impact initiatives will remain a cornerstone of its academic strategy.
